Our client has grown from a small local company to a diverse corporation known for its innovative insurance products and superior customer service. They are strongly rooted in the Southeast, with the specialized experience and geographic focus of a major regional carrier. At the same time, they offer their policyholders and agents the broad-based expertise and technological resources of a national company. They presently offer the opportunity to join their organization in a newly created position, Medical Underwriting Manager. In this role you will be part of a wholly owned TPA. This TPA continues to grow and expand. Their portfolio is made up of mostly individually based products. Though they are working towards a portfolio of both small group and individual product offerings. Currently the product offerings include: A group mini-med. An Individual short term medical product. Working on a individual mini-med product.

 

As the Medical Underwriting Manager you will

  • Be responsible for the assessment of individual medical and small group risk and making appropriate underwriting decisions.

  • Review, analyze, interpret, and apply medical, legal and other required information to evaluate and determine acceptability of risk.

  • Communicate and respond to inquires from sales personnel regarding underwriting decisions.

  • Communicate with customers, physicians, attorneys, reinsures, and others as appropriate to obtain necessary information or to provide explanations of underwriting decisions.

  • Create the policies, procedures and underwriting guidelines for this start-up division.

Group Medical Underwriting Manager Qualifications

  • A BA/BS in a related field of business.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in individual and/or small group medical underwriting from a carrier environment required.

  • Knowledge of rating methods, medical terminology, testing, and treatment and laboratory procedures.

  • The ability to interpret benefit plan documents and stop loss policy provisions is also required.

  • Excellent Microsoft Word, Excel and Project skills, as well as outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
